Hello Members! Just a quick email here to inform you of some upcoming events and news…

Working Member Opportunities

Sampling Hosts: We’d like some more people on call for setting up and presenting free samples at different times during each month (Cleaning up, too, of course.) Ideal candidates enjoy chatting with people, creating attractive displays, and staying ’til the cleaning’s done. We can arrange a specific time each month, or get on the call list. Please contact ellen@buffalomountaincoop.org.

Cool Kids Crew: We can use a couple more team members on the dairy stocking brigade. Display space is limited, and the products are perishable, so keeping the shelves filled will keep the department healthy. Rose and Diane are doing a great job, but there are more days and times that need coverage. It doesn’t have to take too long at once, and we can work it into your regular shopping schedule. Believe it or not, winter is actually a good time to start this weekly job. You don’t feel a temperature shock. Please contact ellen@buffalomountaincoop.org.

Shovelers: We’re keeping up with the front of the store, but we need the roof outside the cafe and the back deck and steps to be kept shoveled. We have some help with this, but probably need more folks to relocate the white stuff.

3 or 4 Buffalo Mt. Co-op Collective members are going to a trade show at the Foxwoods Resort in the Ledyard/ Mashantucket area of Connecticut, May 16-18. We don’t want to stay at the resort or other local hotels. Do any other coop members have family or friends who might give us some floor space? (They won’t have to feed us, and we’ll probably be able to feed them.We’ll also contribute some $) I’ve got family between 1-2 hours from there, and we can do that if necessary, but would rather be closer. If you know of a place or places we might stay, please contact Ellen or Kate.

Annual Gathering and Board Elections

Any member-owner in good standing and up to date with equity payments is eligible to run. Board term is 2 years.

Are you interested in supporting your co-op by becoming a Board Member? Buffalo Mountain Co-op Board candidates should have:

  • A willingness and enthusiasm to support and progress the mission of BMFC
  • A commitment to advancing our cooperatively owned and democratically run local food business.
  • A desire to communicate with a wide variety of our membership to help determine how to best meet their needs.
Potential candidates would ideally posses some of the following:
  • Experience and success with thriving local enterprises
  • Management oversight capabilities
  • Non-profit or community organizing experience
If so, we ask that you fully participate in the workings of the Board!
This means:
  • Enthusiasm and love for the co-op business model
  • Commit to attend meetings, with an understanding of the time required to participate (typically 2-6 hours per month)
  • Be willing to participate in discussion, compromise, and work as part of a team
  • Foster a strong collaborative relationship with the Collective Management Team
If you’re interested in running, or if you have questions, please email kate@buffalomountaincoop.org and come to our Board Meeting on Thurs Feb 23.

Raise Up Rachel: A Friend-Raising Fundraiser

Suggested donation of $15 adults & $5 kids, tickets available in advance at the Buffalo Mountain Co-op in Hardwick

Raise Up Rachel: A friend-raising fundraiser for the whole family
Enjoy an evening of entertainment, a delicious dinner and dancing with old friends and new, all while supporting a local family. Rachel Davey is a mother of two young children, a small business owner in Hardwick, and a vibrant and active member of the community. Her brain tumor has returned as a more aggressive type of cancer so she has decided to step up her game, too. This fundraiser has the specific goal of contributing to Rachel’s alternative treatments, which are not covered by insurance.

The full evening of entertainment is sure to delight the whole family.
Local chefs and farmers will provide a delicious chili and cornbread dinner (with gluten-free and vegetarian options). A silent auction will feature a variety of goods and services: professional massages, piglets, handmade crafts, local gift certificates, and much more. The entertainment portion of the evening includes Central Vermont’s funniest stand-up comedians– Cat Klarich, Andy Perchlik and Kathleen Kanz (Winner of the 2016 VT’s Funniest Comedian Contest); “Speaking in Tongues”, a 100% improvisational and live instrumentation Hip Hop group; local Vaudeville star “The Real McCoy”; and music from “Granite Junction” and “Beg, Steal, or Borrow”

We know it takes a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to heal its people. Your contribution will make a difference.

 How many acres do you farm?
2-3 acres

What town is your Farm Located in?
Woodbury

How long have you been farming?
2 years

Why do you farm?
We farm because somebody has to!  We also enjoy the work and contributing to the agricultural heritage of this region.

What do you grow?
We grow lots of snap and snow peas, fava beans and dry beans, mustard greens and lettuces, cucumbers, patty pans, watermelons and muskmelons… Sweet corn and strawberries, tomatoes and peppers, eggplant and indigo!

Where does the food you grow go?
We sell to our local coops, restaurants, caterers and institutions as well as directly to our neighbors through our farmstand (located on Rt. 14, right across from Woodbury Lake.  We’re open Thursday, Friday and Saturday: 12-6pm).

What are your growing practices, if not certified organic? (fertilization, pesticides, etc…)
Our produce is certified organic by VOF.  We farm to put as much back into the soil as we take out.

Do you have any animals on your farm? (not including humans)
We raise hens to supply our farmstand with fresh eggs.  The eggs are not certified organic; the hens are fed a lot of vegetables and organic layer pellets.  We also raise rabbit meat on pasture and are working to eliminate rabbit pellets completely from their diet.

If you could be any fruit or vegetable, what would it be?
Ansel – A determinate tomato.

 How many acres do you farm?

Two acres

How long have you been farming?

I’ve been farming off and on since 2001.  I’ve been at my current location in Cabot for the past four years.

 

Why do you farm?

I started farming because I wanted to be able to provide quality organic produce for my two young daughters at the time.  I feel that it is important to have a first hand knowledge of where my food comes.  Farming is also a great way for me to connect with the natural cycles of the world while also providing food security for my family.  I enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes form enjoying the bounty of my hard work.

Introducing “The Allium Family”

Today the Produce Department released their first issue of “The Allium Family!” These pamphlets will be released through the year and will contain facts, recipes, and other information about a highlighted vegetable or fruit. Each “issue” will also feature an original comic created by local artists (and coop members) Leif Goldberg and Erin Rosenthal.

Show up to our Garlic tasting Monday March 9th at 5pm and get our first issue: “Garlic to the Rescue.” OR, just grab one while browsing our produce department…

Members Only Sale - Mar 15

Deep Winter Garlic Tasting and Brix Testing and Film Showing

garlicon Monday March 9th at 5PM, we are having a free garlic tasting of at least 7 different local garlic varieties upstairs in the Buffalo Mountain Coop’s Cafe. They will be prepared raw and roasted in oil so you can taste the differences. You will get a chance to vote on your favorite variety! We will also be testing the brix levels of all the garlic before the event to see if there is any correlation between what varieties folks chose as their favorites and the ones with the highest nutrient density. Brix is a measurement of the relative nutrient density in a fruit or vegetable. We will have more info about why the Coop is labeling the brix levels of the produce we sell. Remember, Garlic Breath is Beautiful!

Following the tasting @7pm we will be screening the film: “Garlic Is As Good As Ten Mothers”
